8 Steps to Replace a Glass Tabletop

Accidents happen and although tempered glass is very difficult to break it, life happens. You may need replacement glass or if you  just want to add a sleek yet versatile look to your home glass tabletops are a great option. As mentioned before tempered glass is hard to crack because it undergoes a unique heating process making it more durable than standard glass. This type of durable tabletop is perfect for an outdoor patio table as it’s easy to clean.

There are a couple steps to take to get the exact tabletop you’re looking for, all you need is a measuring tape.

Step 1: It’s time to bring out your inner artist. Don’t worry, if you don’t have a creative bone in your body, break out the ruler. All you need to do is draw out the shape of your tabletop. Make sure it is clear and large enough to make out the shape.

If you are don’t have a shape yet consider some of the most popular styles:

  • Round
  • Square
  • Rectangle
  • Oval
  • Octagon

If you want something different draw it out, find some examples, and a professional can replicate the shape you want.

Step 2: Always give your dimensions in inches. If your table top is 4 feet, 6 ½ inches square, write it as 54 ½ inches by 54 ½ inches.

Step 3: Convey how thick you want the tabletop to be.

Step 4: Decide whether you want clear glass or if you want to color temper it. You can tint the glass as well; typical colors are light green, dark grey, and bronze.

Step 5: Specify what kind of edgework you want. Obviously a glass professional isn’t going to give you a sharp piece of glass, but if you don’t tell them what you prefer they will usually seam the edge. This makes it a safe piece of glass to use, but it’s not the look you want for a glass tabletop. One of the most popular choices is a finished edge like a glossy or satin “pencil grind.”

Step 6: If this table is for outdoors use, indicate the diameter and location for an umbrella hole.

Step 7: Draw a broken line to delineate the frame and base of the table and how the glass will be placed on the table.

Step 8: Find a reliable glass shop to fulfill your order. That’s it! Your all set for your custom glass tabletop.
