Why You've Underestimated Flooring

Beautiful flooring isn’t the first think you notice in a bathroom because it flows with the rest of the bathroom. But lets be real, bad flooring always sticks out like a sore thumb.

Stick out for your design genius, not poor choice of flooring. Here’s where to start:

Pick Your Medium

Let’s just get this out of the way- carpet. Need I say more? Granted there may be one exception, but for this remodel let’s stay away from carpet. Bathrooms are not the place to even think about adding carpet.

What’s trending for bathroom floors?

Tiles: They add a polished look and can add to your theme. But take into consideration the amount of dirt that will get into the grout of your tiles.

“Grey, white, and ‘greige’ colors continue to grow in popularity. Low contrast palettes with minimum coloration are still the predominant trend,” says Kevin McDaniel, director of product design and development for the Tile Shop.

Porcelain Tiles: Porcelain is a great low cost option with an elegant look.

“This can look like stone without the additional costs of installation, purchase price and maintenance,” comments Carlos Martinez, first officer of C-Bek Tile & Stone Design.

Glass: Glass can take on many different shape and sizing combinations. Glass is also a green alternative. It can be made from sand and other recyclable materials. It can also withstand a lot of weight; so don’t be afraid of this delicate look

Wood: This is another great eco-friendly option if you use reclaimed wood. This wood is taken from old homes, cleaned and dried so it can be used again. Wood can also get a seal so that it is not damaged in a wet environment like a bathroom.

Keep this in Mind

Flooring Transitions: What’s the floor of the hallway or adjacent room like? How will it look next to the flooring you have in mind?

Color palette: How will the colors you’re thinking of for the walls mesh with the surfaces you have in mind?

Durability: Consider moisture and longevity. Hardwoods are the most durable and often the most elegant choices for cabinets and floors. Glass is sleek and modern while also being the easiest to clean.
